The original story was written by the late Edward Gorey, who was famous for his dark, sneakily sinister books and intricately drawn accompanying illustrations that appealed to both children and adults alike

When a curious creature scuttles into the Bishop family's house, they have no idea how to get rid of it. Eating plates, trapping them in their drawing room for weeks and throwing their favourite possessions into a pond, it holds them prisoner in their own home. Vividly theatrical and uniquely fantastical, this creepily comic tale of mischief and disruption will delight children and adults alike. Floating is an engrossing exploration of the concepts of belonging and national identity. Hugh Hughes, inhabitant of Anglesey, confronts these issues with naïve wit when the Welsh island is cast adrift from the mainland during an earthquake. Left to float around the Atlantic Ocean, Hughes and his partner Sioned Rowlands ruminate on who they are, while challenging the nature of how the audience relate personally to their tale, drawing deep affection from them as they expose the intimacies of their unusual lives. Floating amuses and delights whilst asking: are we defined by where we come from?
