Kiss From Alexander, A

Stephen De Ghelder     Kiss From Alexander, A
Company
Synopsis:

Alexander the Great sleeps in his tomb through time as he was half god. He is looked after by a "Guardian". As the love of his life - Hephaestion - was mortal - he is condemed to be reincarnated over and over. Present day New York and Nick Matthews is putting on an Off-Broadway musical that he has written entitled "Alexander Was Great". It is a camp and outrageous musical portraying Alexander as being very very promiscuous. He has cast ex-lover Brad Berenson as Alexander and Brad hopes to get back with Nick again. Brad is unware that the stage manager Augie has a huge crush on him. The "Guardian" becomes aware of the forthcoming production and is alarmed as it is even worse than the movie "Alexander" so he awakens Alexander and reports on what is happening. With some help from the Gods Alexander vows get the production taken off. Alexander turns up during a rehearsal and takes over from Brad during one of the musical numbers. Nick is bowled over by this newcomer and gives him the lead part - much to the annoyance of Brad who is now given a smaller role. Nick feels that some how he knows Alexander but there seems to be nowhere that they could have met. Nick tells him that he has always been interested in Alexander the Great and has always dreamt of having just one kiss from Alexander. Alexander still pines for Hepheastion but is drawn to Nick. Before the first preview Alexander persuades Nick to change the play so that it is more like an Ancient Greek tragedy. It does not go well with the preview audience nor with the cast who have found it difficult to perform and some of them have picked up injuries. In an effort to salvage things Nick decides to go back to his original. Brad in an effort to get his role back asks Alexander over to his appartment to go through their lines. He also invites Nick over at a slightly later time. When Alexander arrives - Brad spikes his drink and then accidently spills another drink over Alexander's jeans and sends him into the bedroom to take his wet things off. Instead of Nick arriving Augie does. Augie thinks that Nick is there and that Nick and Brad are getting back together again. Brad explains what he is trying to do. When Nick arrives Augie goes into the bedroom. Brad tells Nick he is entertaining and the guy he is entertaining is in the bedroom but Augie comes out only in his underwear. Brad then drags Alexander out - Nick thinks the worst and runs away. Alexander rushes after Nick and catches up with him at his appartment. It is now obvious that they are in love with each other. But Nick can't understand his thoughts for Alexander the Great and after Nick lights a special concocted incense candle - Alexander realises that Nick is Hephaestion. The first night of "Alexander Was Great" is a success. But Alexander disappears after the curtain call. When he can't be found Nick announces he is leaving the show. The "Guardian" arrives and tries to get Nick to forget Alexander but when he refuses he is threatened with the wrath of the Gods. Furies and Fates start circling him until only one robed Fate is left. The robe falls away to reveal Alexander who is defying the Gods too so that he can be with Nick/Hephaestion.
