Synopsis: | Wesley isn't like other boys, a fact that drives his normal parents mad. He's an inventor with no taste for pizza or soda, for football or shaved heads, who regularly refuses to join the crowd and fit in. And, of course, he has tormentors. With school over for the summer, Wesley sets about coming up with a project for the warm months. After he learns about seeds and crops at school, Wesley embarks on a project to grow his own staple crop and found a new civilization. The west wind delivers seeds in the night; five days later a strange fruit-bearing crop emerges. Over the course of the summer, it grows to dominate his backyard landscape. From the crop, which Wesley names 'swist' after the sound the wind makes as it blows through its leaves, he creates food, clothing, furniture, insect repellent/sun block, a new game, a mode of keeping time and even his own language. He starts a profitable business selling his sun block/sun repellent on eBay. Curiosity and then admiration overcomes his enemies, and then even his conservative parents, who end up being inspired and drawn in by Wesley's passion and his ability survive on the products of his own small landscape. | |||||
