Anna Karenina

Synopsis:
a huge novel filletted to two and half hours. Beautifully distills the romance to the four main characters, an aatonishing insight into the double nature of the couple bond, the way it is both the arena for our most intensely private dreams and longings, and a profoundly social institution which cannot survive the trauma of parenthood, boredom, ageing and the thoUSAnd other banalities of everyday life without the rich webeb of other people's needs and expectations to sustain it. - MacMillan, Scotsman

Every One

Jo Clifford
Explores the lives of an ordinary family who are aware that they are part of a story, and initially bemused by all the attention. The everyday concerns and events of their lives form the early part of the play - raising children, growing up, growing old. But all of this changes when Death comes calling. Plunged suddenly into a reality where they can no longer rely on the 'certainties' of existence, Joe, Mary, Kevin and Mazz must reassess their lives. Perspectives change and the things they cherish and regret are stripped of all the usual distractions and confusions. The play presents a warm and uplifting look at how ordinary people deal with tragedy. It's a story that will resonate with anyone who has lost someone they love - and suggests that when we grieve it's for the good times that are past rather than the pain we feel now.

Great Expectations

Jo Clifford
A beautifully simple adaptation of one of Dickens's best-loved novels, bringing it thrillingly to life for the stage. When the orphan Pip meets the convict Magwitch in a graveyard and is forced to help him escape, his life takes a series of unexpected turns. Invited to the house of the mysterious Miss Havisham, he falls in love with her adopted daughter, the beautiful but cold-hearted Estella. Then the generosity of an unknown benefactor sends him to London to become a gentleman. But the truth behind his change of fortune, once revealed, is not what Pip expects...Eminently actable and stageable, this version is also ideal for schools and amateur theatre companies.

Lucy's Play

Jo Clifford
"John Clifford uses the story of St. Lucy who, in Syracuse in 300 aD is said to have put out her eyes rather than submit to a Roman general, as a jumping off point in all kinds of directions . . . Clifford looks at the way self-deception, ambition and manipulation are used by the Church to secure their position 'at a time of darkness before the red dawn'. and he goes on to deal with the warmongers, the futility of conflict and the ability of the human spirit to surmount impossible odds, ending on a high note of forgiving optimism."

Tchaikovsky And The Queen Of Spades

Synopsis:
Clifford's idea is to find in Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades a key to the composer's own life. Thus the aged Countess who, in the story, possesses the secret of the fortune-creating three cards, transmogrifies into the real-life Madame von Meck who bankrolled the composer. and, just as the fictional Hermann is torn between money and love, so the composer himself battles with the pull of art and sex. Mean-while, a ghostly Tchaikovsky surveys events from the vantage point of 1917.

Tree Of Knowledge, The

Jo Clifford
Philosopher, David Hume and father of modern economics, adam Smith awake in Edinburgh in the early 21st Century. To their bewilderment, joy and horror, it is a prerevolutionary world where all the knowledge they ever dreamt of is at everyone's fingertips and the utopia of a free market economy is a reality. But at what cost to the planet and to humanity? With their fellow traveller, Eve, a Scottish everywoman, Hume and Smith embark on an extraordinary journey of enlightenment - from the concrete New Towns of Scotland's central belt, to Silicon Glen, Ecstasy and the gay clubs of Edinburgh.

Jo Clifford
Written in 1934, Yerma is set in rural Southern Spain, where Lorca grew up. as in his other masterpieces, Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda alba, the play's main character falls victim to an overwhelming passion they cannot control. In Yerma - which means 'barren' - a woman longs to have a child by her reluctant husband. although remaining faithful to him despite her attraction to another man, she eventually murders him in a climactic frenzy.

www.doollee.com comprises a comprehensive online searchable database for plays written in English since the production of Look back In Anger in 1956. Each play listing contains a playwright biography, synopsis, cast size, creative and production team for the premiere production, date and location of the first performance and much more.doollee.com not only defines the World's theatrical repertoire for the first time but also aims to revitalise that repertoire by reintroducing many lost scripts and providing a gateway for locating and clearing rights for a very large number existing scripts. We are delighted to receive information from users where our own research has been unable to locate details on the holder of a play's rights.doollee.com contains a comprehensive listing for each new play written in English produced by professional theatre companies, venues, festivals, commercial producers and once-off-producers from 1956 to the present. It includes adaptations, translations and new versions. The database also includes those plays produced by fringe (unsubsidised) companies and by semi-professional organisations, where the work is deemed to be of particular significance to the repertoire. Thus you will get help with playwright, dramatist, plays, biography, theatres, agent, synopses, cast sizes, production, published, dates, database, research.

Apart from very popular and world touring productions, many performing arts events are largely forgotten about in a matter of months. Traces may remain in various collections, but few collecting agencies, such as libraries, catalogue each flyer or program individually. Hence, unless one knows that an event took place at a certain time in a certain place, tracking down such an event as part of a research project is often a matter of chance. Where research needs to be carried out on high profile and well-documented productions only, this is not a problem. However, both the historian and the analyst will attest that the cultural, political, or sociological context in which a performing arts event takes place is also of major importance, as are the other events that took place in close proximity, either in place or time. A good overview of such productions provides us with a 'social document' that can greatly enhance cultural studies in ways that extend far beyond the narrow confines of theatre history. For instance, data such as this can be used to monitor the health of communities, particularly when used in association with data obtained from other social science disciplines. When one researches a particular playwright one might want to know about all the productions of plays by that author; if one wants to investigate what choices a particular audience had over a period of history and compare this to, say, an ethnic breakdown of the population, one would need to know broadly all the events that took place during that time. If one wanted to do a statistical analysis on the shift in popularity of a genre over one or more generations, it is important to have knowledge of most of the relevant major and minor performance events that took place. In this context, issues of aesthetic quality and the professionalism of a production - which will of course have an impact on such studies - are not the determining factors when deciding to include or exclude events, since all events are the raw material for such research.
