Biography and Notes (further contributions welcome) :

born in Algeria or French and German Jewish parentage, Cixous is Professor of Literature at the experimental University of Paris VIII and director of the Centre d'Etudes Féminines, founded in 1974. She is the author of over 30 books, including numerous novels and volumes of literary criticism and essays that include several on theatre. Her plays include small-scale psychoanalytical works, which have attracted particular interest in the light of her writings on psychoanalysis, and 'écriture feminine' such as The Newly Born Woman (with Catherine Clement). Portrait of Dora dramatizes Freud's case study of a hysteric with whom he used dream analysis, presenting events from Dora's point of view. It makes visible the characters' hidden selves, the desires they do not reveal of their own accord and the oppressive bourgeois society of Freud's day. The Name of Oedipus, characteristically linguistically and theatrically experimental, also uses theatre as the space for exploring sexuality. Cixous's later work for theatre includes epic plays for Théâtre du Soleil, collaborations with director Ariane Mnouchkine which range from the breadth and sweep of Shakespeare (whom Cixous has translated), to the conflict of East and West , religion and politics in Cambodia under King Sihanouk and the struggle for Indian independence. Untranslated plays include: La Pupille, in Cahiers Renaud-Barrault 1972 v8; L'Arrivante (1977).
