Ping Chong was born in 1946 and raised in New York's Chinatown. He began his Theatre career with Meredith Monk, founding his own company in 1975, which later became Ping Chong and Company. He has created over fifty major works for the stage including Humboldt's Current, Nosferatu, Kind Ness and Undesirable elements. For nearly three decades Ping Chong and his company have written and staged some of the most innovative and arresting examinations of otherness on stages in America, Europe and Asia. His work, more than that of any other Theatre artist, has explored the intersections between Asian cultures and American society now and throughout history.

Angels Of Swedenborg, The

Synopsis:
the piece is a multi-media dance theatre meditation on the fate of modern man, caught between his material existence and spiritual aspirations. It is inspired by the 18th century scientist and philosopher emanuel Swedenborg, who realized that science could not give him his wholeness or sense of spirituality, and subsequently wrote 30 volumes about the visions he had traveling to heaven and hell and back in his lifetime.

Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity

Synopsis:
Beyond Sacred is an interview-based theatre production by Ping Chong + Company exploring the diverse experiences of young Muslim New Yorkers. The five participants in Beyond Sacred vary in many ways, but share the common experience of coming of age in a post-9/11 New York City, at a time of increasing Islamophobia. Participants come from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and include men and women that reflect a wide range of Muslim identities, including those who have converted to Islam, those who were raised Muslim, but have since left the faith, those who identify as secular or culturally Muslim, and those who are observant on a daily basis. The goal of Beyond Sacred is to illuminate daily experiences of Muslim new Yorkers, and work towards greater communication and understanding among Muslim and non-Muslim communities in NYC.
