Writer, photographer and lecturer, Mr. Challis is an Essex man who has served as writer in residence, Northampton College of Further Education and writer for BBC Radio Leicester. He has had published numerous articles in magazines and other periodicals on the subject of contemporary literature (he was awarded the first Doctorate in Beatology for his research into Kerouac and the Beat Generation) as well as poems, short fiction and drama reviews. Some of his dramatic works are informed by the five years he spent teaching in prison and borstals. In 1985, he received the first Local Radio Writing Fellowship in England and he will be working throughout the year to encourage local writing via radio phone-ins, interviews with aspiring local writers, featuring of regional writer's groups, the launching of writer's workshops on radio, etc.
