Vienna Carrolls interest is in the role of Spirituals in early 19th century Southern social relations. She has long considered the Spirituals a vital resource in reconstructing freedom stories of the enslaved prior to the Civil War and has recently expanded her research to include secular songs in illustrating antebellum social relations between Black people, enslaved and free, as well as with whites and others. Ms Carroll was a presenter along with other historians and scholars at the Schomburg Centers 2nd Annual Summer Education Institute: Black History 360° on ways to create antebellum life and Underground Railroad activity through song in a whole life context. She has been invited to return to join the Schomburg Centers 2012 distinguished panel of presenters.
