| Synopsis: | A cross between Lorca's 'House Of Bernarda Alba' and television's 'Prisoner: Cell Block H', Patricia Burke Brogan's play about 'fallen women' is a great idea thinly rendered. Set in Ireland of 1963, it is the doleful tale of unmarried mothers separated from their children and condemned to slave in gulag-like, Convent-run laundries. The women are subjugated by a good Nunlbad Nun duo, but prove themselves a colourfully resilient brigade whether it be Brigit the bullying mimic. Mandy the Elvis-obsessed romantic or Nellie Nora the woodbine-puffing bumpkin. Add to this asthmatic Cathy escaping in laundry baskets, and the nervous shrieking of painfully shy 17-year-old orphan Juliet, plus a good deal of soiled clerical underwear, and you ye a rich set of possibilities.
