Notes: | In case this is of interest - since it appears to be of an earlier date than the Google reported publication of Bridie's play. In 1940 as a cadet at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, I played the part of Sara in the play Tobias and The Angel by James Bridie. I have in hand the printed piece given to the audience. Our headmaster was R. Kempson, related (if I remember aright) to Rachel Kempson and/or Vanessa Redgrave - or maybe his daughter was Vanessa who married Rupert !!! Our producers for the play were W.R.G. Eustace and J.S. Sampson of the school's faculty. Our prompter was D.H Cunliffe-Owen also faculty and who may, later, have had a name in academics or authorship.
Synopsis: | The Archangel Raphael accompanies Tobias when he goes to collect a debt owed to his old blind father. Tobias falls in love with Sara the daughter of the merchant who owes the money and marries her. Sara's father has strangled her previous seven husbands on their wedding night. With the help of the Archangel Tobias overcomes him and returns home to his father with his bride.
