64

Synopsis:
Downtown theater vanguard Surf Reality is proud to present the world premiere of 64, a collection of 64 short plays written by Timothy Braun inspired by paintings by Brooklyn artist Jennilie Brewster. Visual artist Jennilie Bewster made 64 paintings using photographs cut out from the New York Times, pasted onto canvas and painted over. In some cases, she expanded the scene, in others the source image is entirely transformed, even obliterated. While on residency at Djerassi in Northern California, she met austin-based playwright Timothy Braun, who was inspired to write 64 one-page plays for each painting. Surf Reality re-imagines these plays as a multi-media collage of theater, performance art, paintings, soundscapes, video animations and song. the words and images share a stark poignancy that speaks to the collective sense of the American myth and the sometimes broken American dream. the paintings and plays together become mutually reinforcing parallel events where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. 53 of the 64 plays will be performed live. the remaining plays will be broadcast on YouTube, as podcasts or on Surf Reality's website. Plays will also be on voicemail. the play Pink Cross can be heard now by calling 718-296-6481
