Dionysius Lardner Boursiquot (26 December c. 1820 18 September 1890), commonly known as Dion Boucicault, was an Irish actor and playwright famed for his melodramas. By the later part of the 19th century, Boucicault had become known on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the most successful actor-playwright-managers then in the English-speaking theatre. The New York Times heralded him in his obituary as "the most conspicuous English dramatist of the 19th century."

Notes: | authorised adaptation of the French play Les Bohemiens de Paris by Eugène Grange and Adolphe d'Ennery
Synopsis: | The play has much in common with W. T. Moncrieff's "Scamps of London", itself an adaptation of Dennery and Eugène Grange's "Les Bohemiens de Paris". However, the most important instance of unoriginality in relation to this play is Boucicault's plagiarism of the sensation scene from Augustin Daly's melodrama "Under the Gaslight" (1867), in which a character is placed across a railroad track and rescued at the last moment from an oncoming train.

Synopsis: | ARRAH-NA-POGUE was the second of Dion Boucicault's great "Irish plays", written after The Colleen Bawn and before The Shaughraun. The play was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Dublin on 7 November 1864, after which Boucicault rewrote it radically, cutting a duel in the final act, condensing the plot, and inserting a "sensation scene" in which Shaun climbs an ivy-covered tower wall. The first English production opened at the (Royal) Princess's Theatre, London, on 22 March 1865. It ran for 164 nights, with Agnes and Dion Boucicault in the roles of Arrah Meelish and Shaun the Post.

Notes: | "A Grand Fairy Spectacular Opera" written in conjunction with J. R. Planche
| Melusine, Queen of Fairyland, having been deprived of her kingdom for the crime of wedding a mortal, flies with her daughter, Bijou, to her husband's cot, to find that he has shared her punishment and died for the offence. The usurpers of her throne, Skepsis and Pragma (King and Queen of the Gnomes) know that they can never securely reign until they possess Melusine's Crown, Sceptre, and Robes, and for the purpose of obtaining possession of them, pursue her, but on discovering her retreat, find that they have arrived too late, for Melusine has in the meantime, given her regalia to the safe keeping of her late ministers and friends, viz.: -- Mistigris, Spirit of the Earth -- Wanda, Spirit of the Waters -- and Azurine, Spirit of the Air, who each promise to hide them in the deepest recesses of their respective domains. Seventeen years elapse, and Bijou, grown up to womanhood, has been concealed in the Rosewood Forest, and brought up as a companion of the villagers, and Phassalis, Prince of Zanzoozee, who has abdicated his throne, and disguised himself as a Forester, wins the hand and heart of Bijou. During all this time Skepsis and Pragma have vainly endeavoured to discover Bijou, in order that she might be wedded to their son, Porthos, and on the very day of Bijou's Nuptials, finds [sic] her whereabouts and would cast their evil spells over her, but for the timely arrival of Melusine, who appears to her daughter, Bijou, and gives her Twelve Golden Eggs, possessing a power by which she can protect herself -- the breaking of each egg securing for its owner any wish that may be desired. Melusine also tells her daughter, Bijou, her real rank, and exhorts her to endeavour to gain the lost regalia, and so recover her birthright and power. Bijou, with her betrothed, Babil, now assisted by Mistigris, proceed to discover the Robes, Crown and Sceptre, they pass thro' many adventures, visiting the depths of the sea, the expanse of the air, and the confines of the erath. During their travels they constantly encounter Skepsis, Pragma, and their imps, who, in various disguises, endeavour to foil them; at last the missing Crown and Sceptre are recovered from the earth and water, and lastly, the Robes are restored to them by one Princess Fortinbrasse, who has, through their power, become Queen of Atalantes, the Silver City of the moon, but who, on finding they are the property of Bijou, returns them to their rightful owner. Thus Bijou recovers her birthright, Babil is permitted to marry her, and Skepsis with his wicked party are overthrown. (Summary from the 1882 Alhambra Theatre Royal version of the play | |||||

Genre: | legendary drama in three acts
| Parts: | Male | - | Female | - | ||
Parts other: | cast of 19 | |||||
Notes: | an adaptation of the senior Alexander Dumas's Les Freres Corses
| The Corsican Brothers is a story of revenge and honour, adapted by Bouciault from the original by Alexandre Dumas. The brothers from the title are Fabian and Louis Dei Franchi. When the play begins, Fabian is at the family home in Corsica, and Louis is living in Paris. Acts one and two are supposed to occur simultaneously, act one showing Fabian's reactions to a vision and act two showing what did actually happen. At the end of act one the audience, Fabian, and his mother, see the ghost of Louis appear on the stage and show them the image of his death. In act two the audience learns that Louis Dei Franchi has travelled to Paris in pursuit of a lady, Madame De Lesparre, with whom both brothers had fallen in love. Fabian steps back and allows his brother to pursue Madame De Lesparre to Paris while he stays in Corsica with their mother. Unfortunately, on arriving in Paris Louis discovers that Madame De Lesparre has been married and he vows to stay away from her. However, her husband, curious at Louis refusal to meet with them, questions him. Louis admits that he was in love with Madame De Lesparre. Instead of being angry, her husband admires Louis' honesty and asks him to protect her while he is away on a trip. Lady De Lesparre is also pursued by Chateau Renaud, a duellist and womaniser. They both arrive at a dinner party Louis is attending and, after an argument, Lady De Lesparre asks Louis to take her home. Chateau Renaud takes umbrage and challenges Louis to a duel, who accepts the challenge. The scene ends with Louis being killed by a sword wound to the chest and swearing to tell his family about his death. Act three opens with Chateau Renaud and Montgiron, Renaud's friend and second at the duel, trying to flee the country after Louis' death. However, their carriage crashes in the very part of the forest where Louis died. Fabian Dei Franchi suddenly appears from among the trees and both the other men think they are looking at the ghost of Louis. Fabian introduces himself and swears to have revenge on the man who killed his brother. He and Chateau Renaud have a sword fight and Chateau Renaud is killed, Louis is avenged. The play ends with the ghost of Louis advancing across the stage. | |||||

Notes: | - | |||||
| When the amorous Sir Harcourt Courtly prepares to wed an heiress several decades his junior, he hasn't reckoned on the superior charms of her cousin, the foxhunting Lady Gay Spanker. . .Boucicault, the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, wrote the brilliantly funny London Assurance in 1841 and thereby created - in Sir Harcourt and Lady Spanker - two of the great comic roles of the English stage. A classic English comedy of manners that borrows from Sheridan and anticipates Oscar Wilde, the play is a small comedic masterpiece and is regularly revived. | |||||

Synopsis: | Act 1 is set in the chambers of Littleton Coke, a lawyer with no clients, who likes to spend more money than he owns. Having just received a refusal from his politician brother Tom to help him with his debts, Littleton is visited by his College chum Lord Charles Roebuck. Roebuck is the son of Lord Pompion, the Home Secretary. He is in love with Kate Rocket, the daughter of the irascible and impecunious Colonel Rocket. Lord Pompion, however, whishes him to marry Lady Alice, a wealthy young widow, and to become an MP for his party; since Colonel Rocket is a supporter of the opposition this is a serious obstacle to his pursuit of Kate. Roebuck therefore asks Littleton to stand against him in the election, offering in return to make him "a present of the widow", a match which would solve all of Littleton's financial difficulties. The act ends with the arrival of Littleton's brother Tom Coke and his old tutor, the minister Jesse Rural. Having been taken for the attorney and the bailiff by Littleton, who has fled from the flat with Roebuck, they find themselves being insulted by Littleton's clerk Bob as "vampires" and "leeches" before Bob, too, makes his exit. In Act 2, by various accidents and machinations, all of the characters find themselves at Lord and Lady Pompion's house. Lady Alice, who turns out to be an extremely boisterous young woman, knows that Charles and Kate are in love and wants to help their relationship along. Littleton and his brother are both smitten with Lady Alice, but it is Littleton she is partial to. But then confusion ensues. Not only do Roebuck and Kate have to hide their inclinations from their fathers, but Lady Alice and Littleton also play a game of making each other jealous, and Jesse Rural, who wants to further the young people's interests, misunderstands who is in love with whom. To this mix are added a lapdog, elopements, disguises, the electioneering cabal and a subplot about a youthful indiscretion of Lord Pompion's. Everything is finally sorted out at the end of Act 5: the two couples get together and Littleton and Tom make up their past differences.

Notes: | Closely based on "Les Pauvres de Paris" (1856) by Edouard-Louis-Alexandre Brisbarre and Eugene Nus, it was a collaboration between Boucicault and three journalists, Seymour, Goodrich, and Warden - although the bulk of the writing was done by Boucicault. It was revived in 1864 in Liverpool, as THE POOR OF LIVERPOOL, and then frequently adapted to the location where it was to be performed, becoming THE POOR OF MANCHESTER or LEEDS, and then THE STREETS OF ISLINGTON, LONDON, or DUBLIN.
Synopsis: | The Poor of New York was initially set during the financial panics of 1837 and 1857, although the local and historical details were later frequently adapted to the places where the play was performed. It was the first of Boucicault's plays (like The Octoroon, or Jessie Brown) which tapped directly into the contemporary mood. The play also features a sensation scene, in which a house burns down on stage.

Genre: | melodramatic play
| Parts: | Male | - | Female | - | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | - | |||||
| The play is about Robert Ffolliott, fiance of Arte O'Neil, who has returned to Ireland after escaping from transportation in Australia. At the play's onset, we are informed that Robert is a a Fenian fugitive, but it soon becomes clear that he is no such thing; rather, he is an innocent local gentleman who was tricked into pledging himself to a criminal disguised as a Fenian whose intent was to then betray him to the police. A country squire who arranged the betrayal, Kinchela, who also conspires to force Arte into marriage, tries to hunt Robert down and arrest him, with the help of a police informer, Harvey Duff. Robert escapes various melodramatic cliffhanger situations with the help of Con the Shaughraun (Irish seachranaí = wanderer, errant person), a roguish stage Irish poacher who provides a great deal of comic relief. Robert's sister, Claire Ffolliot, is in love with an English soldier, Captain Molineaux, who is tracking down Fenians in the area. She cannot decide whether or not to protect her brother or betray the Captain. However, Molineaux's fish out of water attitudes to rural Ireland provide comic relief, and all ends well. The Fenians receive a general amnesty, the couples marry, Kinchela is arrested, and Harvey Duff falls off a cliff. | |||||
