Tawfiq Al-Hakim is one of Egypt's most famous and critically claimed playwrights and the Tree Climber is widely considered one of his finest works. Uniquely humorous and provoking it explores issues of death and resurrection, desire and disappointment and the instability of reality. Tawfik Al Hakeem was Egypt's most renowned playwright of the 20th century. He is considered to be the 'Pinter' of the Arab world. A major Arabic dramatist whose career extends over a span of sixty years. Although his plays have been translated and performed in many countries, Al Hakeem has no recognition in the UK. Very few translations of his plays in English are available and most tend to be rendered literally.
