Synopsis: | It's somehow appropriate that, 33 years later, the same Dave Ainsworth is in full flow on the stage of the Torch Theatre guiding us gently and expertly through the delights and charms of the double-entendre in his latest sell-out one man show 'Mrs. Slocombe's Cat'. Appropriate because his persona, a mixture of genial professor and Charles Hawtrey re-incarnation, is still permeated with the wide-eyed wonder of a schoolboy who has just discovered the thrills of thinly veiled smut in the dark recesses of the playground bike shed with the older smokers. Appropriate because, even now, he comes across as a bloke who generously wants nothing more than to share the joy of his epiphanic moment and open your eyes to the lifetime of unashamed pleasure double-entendre and innuendo can provide. Bemoaning the 70s as a period of "platforms and power cuts", when, despite the creative explosion of punk, the NME readers voted 'Remember You're A Womble' their decade's iconic single, Ainsworth skillfully starts to craft a beautiful, meandering double-entendre web with second division '70s comedy show 'Are You Being Served?' pride of place at the centre. Synopsis: | Researched and written by Dave Ainsworth, the Torch's Youth and Education Officer, Someone Else's Daughter tackles the sensitive issue of prison deaths, through retelling the story of Sarah Campbell who died in 2003 aged just 19. Performed by a large, mainly female cast, the play hits hard. Its story, perhaps a warning to us all, is re-enforced by its young performers - all from local schools. Someone Else's Daughter could have been any one of ours. A bright girl, a tennis champion and daughter of a lecturer, Sarah came from a middle class home. But, at the age of 15, things began to go wrong when she discovered drugs. Someone Else's Daughter tells the stark tale of how a series of unfortunate circumstances led to Sarah's death and how her mother's determined campaign brought the subject to the attention of the public and Parliament. I chose this subject because I felt it was an important story, but I also wanted my students to experience the challenge of performing a re-creation of recent events, explained Dave, who is also directing the production. The Torch's Summer School offers a unique introduction to the world of professional theatre: over two weeks the participants learn how a professional actor approaches the job at hand, working with experienced technical and other theatre staff to create a performance of quality and worth. . . .Hopefully, they will learn that it's not simply about learning lines and speaking in a loud voice, but about developing a character, evolving relationships and controlling emotive qualities within a piece of drama . . . he continued. In spite of it being such a serious piece dealing with very real adult themes and issues, there seems to be no shortage of laughter coming from the rehearsal room. I can't guarantee that everyone will see the play as being quite to their taste . . . enthused participant and Assistant Stage Manager Aisling Phillips who is currently studying at Pembrokeshire College . . . but I can guarantee that the Youth Theatre actors are putting a lot of hard work and effort into performing it; as well as having a lot of fun. . .! | |||||
