Michael Wilcox has worked full time as a playwright since 1974. He gained national recognition with "RENTS" at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh in 1979 after numerous productions in the North East of England with both amateur and professional groups, some of which are mentioned on this site. For a year he was resident playwright at the Traverse, writing two more plays for the company. In addition to his theatre writing, Michael has written extensively for television, including "Inspector Morse" ("Last Bus to Woodstock") and episodes of "Doctor Finlay". "Accounts" was filmed for Film on Four after the stage play won the George Devine Award, and BBC TV's film of "Lent" was voted Best Scripted Contribution to Television in the Pye Television Awards of 1984-85. Michael has also worked as a librettist for Welsh National Opera, Opera North and Northern Sinfonia. His monograph, "Benjamin Britten's Operas" (Absolute Press 1997) was shortlisted for Best Music Book of the Year by the Royal Philharmonic Society. For ten years, he edited Methuen's "Gay Plays" series. Michael's autobiographical journal "Outlaw in the Hills" was published by Methuen in 1991.

Synopsis: | Mrs Steinberg runs a charity shop in Newcastle upon Tyne. The shop is called the Red Flag and she raises money for socialist causes. Janice, April and Peter are the assistants. Matty is sent as a trainee. Peter arrives late sporting a black eye. He tells Janice that he had been set upon by a Sunderland supporter because he was wearing a Newcastle football shirt. He then sees Matty and realises that this is the youth who hit him. When Janice leaves to serve customers Matty comes over and kisses Peter's bruises. Peter cannot understand what is going on - he had followed Matty into a public convenience the evening before and they had had sex in one of the stalls. Matty had then hit Peter when Peter asked if he were gay. From this unpromising start a relationship develops between the two boys. When Mrs. Steinberg goes away Matty radically transforms the business into a thriving business - selling items on the internet and so on. Mrs Steinberg does not approve when she returns as she feels it goes against her socialist principals. | |||||
