NW has written scripts for stage and television as well as more than fifty scripts for radio, broadcast on Radios 3, 4, 5 and BBC7. Seven novels for children have been published, as have short stories and stage plays. In 2004, a stage play, For Starters, had a successful run at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. Purvis is to appear there in 2006. He has run courses on creative writing both here (GB) and abroad. He is a member of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, was on the judging panel for their children's book award in 1994, and chaired the same panel in 1995. Among his radio plays are Conversations from the Engine Room (joint-winner of the BBC/Radio Times Drama Award in 1985), A Grove of Straight Trees (short-listed for the BBC/Radio Times Drama Award in 1993), and A Soldier's Debt (short-listed for the 1999 Prix Italia). Television includes scripts for Doctors, EastEnders, Born and Bred and Holby City.

Synopsis: | Life-changing meetings can happen in the oddest of places: in this case, the vestry of a C of E church is the scene. Uptight, down-trodden Rachel, the vicar's wife, chats to recently-widowed Mr Purvis there and is rather cornered into offering him the post of the church's Health and Safety Officer.
