Activist and campaigner Ryan was born in Fargo, North Dakota. He attended Shanley High School, Fargo.Ryan has raised huge sums for various organisations such as the YWCA's Rape and Abuse Crisis Center and each year has orgainsed a "30 Hour Famine" to raise money to releave poverty and hunger in the world. He is a member of Amnesty International. At Harvard he was involved in numerous GLBT organisations. He is a recepient of the Fargo-Moorehead Human Rights Award.
