| Synopsis: | On the sidelines of a soccer field in Santa Barbara, four parents-Karen, Jennifer, Ronnie and Alice-gather to watch their daughters' club team, The Lightning. Two of the women, Alice and Karen, are especially devoted to the game; however, Alice's daughter is much better than Karen's. Jennifer's daughter is new to the team, but she is outstanding, too. Ronnie, Alice's husband, is more concerned with business affairs than with the intricacies of soccer. Karen and Jennifer are having an affair as the play begins, but Karen soon drops Jennifer for Ronnie, who has separated from Alice. As the play progresses over the course of a year, we witness Alice's attempts to deal with the break-up of her marriage, the growing friendship between Alice and Jennifer, and the rise and fall of Karen and Ronnie's affair. The action on the (offstage) field mirrors, contradicts and complicates the darkly comic action on the sidelines. | |||||
