Alan Stanford has been a principle director of plays at Dublin's renowned Gate Theatre for over fifteen years during which period his productions include, Romeo and Juliet, Tartuffe, Present Laughter, Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities (both adapted by Hugh Leonard), The Collection by Harold Pinter, with Pinter in the role of Harry, The Weeping of Angels starring Brenda Fricker, Cyrano de Bergerac, Shaw's Arms and the Man, Blithe Spirit and Private Lives by Noel Coward, The Misanthrope, The Constant Wife and Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest. He co-adapted and directed productions of The Picture of Dorian Gray and A Christmas Carol, as well as his own adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre and The Old Curiosity Shop. He is considered one of Ireland's leading theatre experts on the works of both Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare. As an Actor at the Gate Theatre his multitude of roles include performance as Salieri in Amadeus and was nominated for three further performances Astrov in Uncle Vanya, Higgins in Pygmalion, Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Herod in Oscar Wilde's Salome. During the Beckett Festival he performed as Pozzo in Waiting for Godot and as Hamm in Endgame, performances he repeated to considerable critical acclaim at the Lincoln Center in New York, The Barbican Centre in London and at various theatres in Toronto, Melbourne an Chicago. He has completed a seven city tour of the United States as well as visiting Beijing and Shanghai with Waiting for Godot, and has also appeared in the recently released film of the play.
