Born Julian Penkivil Slade into a legal family - his father was a K.C. and his brother, Christopher went on to become a Lord of Appeal. He went to Eton and Trinity College Cambridge.He wrote his first two musicals for May Week. Julian attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School intending to become an actor but was more interested in the musical side of things and became resident musical director at the school. His greatest success was "Salad Days" which on its first outing ran longer than "My Fair Lady" and "The Boyfriend" which both started at that time. He played the piano in the orchestra for the first months of its run. He died of cancer on June 17th 2006.
