| The weekly train arrives in a remote Indian town. On board are Lady Christine Fitzsimmons whose daughter has married the local doctor and Sita Roy who has returned after being at college in the US. Christine's daughter is not at the station but many of her son-in-law's family are. When she gets to the house she discovers that her daughter has died. She cannot leave for there is not another train for a week. She slowly comes to respect her son-in-law Rashil.
