Maria Lehmann was the nom de plume of Lotte Moos, the playwright and poet. Born in Berlin she was interrogated by MI5 as a suspect Russian spy and had her play booed off the stage by London communists. She was a refugee from Hitler, but came to regard Stalin with equal loathing. She appeared in productions of Durham University's Kemple Players, after the Second War, and, as Maria Lehmann, began to write plays, one of which took second prize in a BBC-Arts Council competition.
