Next door is loquacious Mid-western new-comer Deb, her workaholic husband Jerry and their disturbed son Caleb. A 'meet the new neighbors' party ensues that will change these families forever, as their secrets and betrayals bubble to the surface. Someone will drown in Jasper Lake tonight, unless Liz and her new boyfriend, an unemployed roadie named Drake, can make it there in time. Synopsis: | The play is a series of monologues that touch on a traumatic childhood experience. Menaced by a bully named Stanley, Jimmy is rescued by his older sister, Candace, who says she can't always be around to protect him from the world's threats. From that epiphany about the reality of human vulnerability emerges a quartet of tragicomic stories on the vagaries of circumstance, the haphazardness of fate, and the self-destructive twists of the human heart. "Sing Me to Sleep" gleans chuckles and chills out of the collusion of cosmic uncertainty and psychic disturbance. Dad died on the toilet - hit by a bolt of lightning - so Jimmy becomes obsessed with staying safe at his home, trying to control his fear of irrational destruction. Mom is dying in a hospital, prattling to a sympathetic doctor rather than her kids, who haven't shown up. Stanley, a violent weirdo, prowls the bars for female companionship. Candace learns her mother is dead on the day she finds her husband, dressed as Santa Claus, at home with his mistress, who is wearing rabbit ears and is covered in chocolate. . . Kuntz takes big risks with this mordant play, suddenly jumping from the ridiculous to the ugly. The payoff is that "Sing Me to Sleep" is a haunting lullaby. | |||||
