Carol Korty has taught playwriting, improvisation, movement, acting, and creative drama to students and adults of all ages in schools, colleges, universities, and community centers. She has served on the faculties of Antioch College, SUNY Brockport, UMass/Amherst, University of Delaware, Boston University, and Emerson College, where she holds the rank of Professor Emerita. Her own work as a playwright and director has been influenced by her early professional years as a dancer and by her interest in world cultures. Her scripts Plays from African Folktales, Silly Soup, Baba Yaga and the Black Sunflower, and Riding the Wind are all dramatizations of classic folktales. Her scriptOn the Line, a participation play about the Bread and Roses strike of 1912, reflects her equally strong interest in social history. She has enjoyed years of touring children's theater to schools and helping young people create theater pieces of their own. Ms. Korty now lives in downeast Maine where she is active in conservation issues in her small coastal community.

Synopsis: | Amid the daily bustle of a Chinese marketplace, a group of villagers tells four tales featuring strong women. In "Yulan's Search for Beauty," a young woman obtains a potion from an Old One to change her face to one of great beauty, only to become vulnerable to the Emperor's demand of the sacrifice of the most beautiful girl to cure his illness. "The Mysterious Stranger" features the actions of a kind old woman toward a stranger, earning her an unexpected reward. In "Li Chi and the Serpent," a young woman dares to face a monster whom the villagers have been placating with an annual human sacrifice. "The Khan's Daughter" follows a poor shepherd to the court of the great Khan, where he undertakes absurdly difficult challenges to win the princess in marriage -- satisfying her final test of his character. | |||||
