Genre: | Play/Drama | |||||
| Parts: | Male | 5 | Female | 1 | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | - | |||||
Synopsis: | Conrad Knowles is a delirious, sometimes very funny and sometimes ploddingly earnest theatrical meditation on the bizarre arrival of serious European dramatic art in this convict colony. Knowles was the first Australian Hamlet, in 1834, for Barnett Levey's Theatre Royal in Sydney. According to the tradition Knowles was a splendid amateur with a bit of flair and Levey a drunken entrepreneur with a talent for commercial controversy. Between them they helped make Australian theatre what it is today. Bogdan Koca has written and directed this multilayered show, in which Knowles' performance as Hamlet sits within the anxieties of the actor playing him, which sits within a lot of nice postmodern play with the conventions of the theatre. Koca, with his Polish heritage and dark gravelly voice, represents the serious European approach to art. In a comic voice-over at the beginning he plays an academic theatre historian who has discovered Levey's archive in the Tel Aviv Library and made a career out of it. "I know more about Conrad Knowles than you do" he growls at his recalcitrant Anglo-Australian audience. - The Australian

Notes: | - | |||||
Synopsis: | Three great writers of the 20th century: a Jew, working and creating in Poland (Bruno Schulz), a Polish aristocrat working and living in Argentina (Witold Gombrowicz), and an Australian novelist and intellectual (Patrick White) meet in what could be Hell, Purgatory or Heaven. . . (or maybe, it's just a hotel room somewhere. . .). Schulz was killed by an SS officer on the street of Gombrowicz's motherland, Gombrowicz left his homeland precisely on the day his country was invaded by Hitler. . . he never came back and became a controversial and "naughty" émigré, Patrick White struggled throughout his life with a parochialism and mediocrity of his culturally isolated motherland. . . The play examines emotions related to the love of culture and the responsibility of an artist as an independent human being but also as a responsible citizen
