The final part of D.C. Jackson's Stewarton Trilogy!

Chooky Brae, The

It's Christmas Day in Stewarton and Irene Gordon's struggling to get in the festive spirit. Her 18 year-old daughter Norma's just had a baby, her ex-husband Gordon's just had a stroke and her eldest Barry's having a break down. Even the Dr Who Christmas special is disappointing. If this was a wonderful life she would receive some angelic intervention - instead she gets Rab McGuire and an escaped chicken that won't be stuffed.

Synopsis:

Company Policy is a screwball comedy set in a unisex toilet. Sally Mallow (like the Marsh) has just joined Jiffy Corp. She likes everything about her new job except for the bathroom arrangements: she's got a secretary, a bigger desk than ever and she might even buy herself a pony. The last thing on her mind is an office romance but her colleagues Dex Sexington and his friend Randy Burley have other ideas.

Ducky, The

Two years is a long time in a teenager's life. Michelle is home from university to spend some time with her great gran while she can. . . Minnie Malloy is dying. In spite of the circumstances she's glad to be back - university isn't all it's cracked up to be. Same people, same pubs, same Claire's Accessories - Michelle isn't having the experience she was promised. Rab is back from Cambridge and now Stewarton feels alien to him. Which is funny because Rab feels like he's at university on the moon with Martians. Norma has left school and is sweeping up hair in Krazy Kutz while she works out what to do. It isn't as easy as it seems - working out what to do, not sweeping up hair!

part of Spend A Penny, a series of short plays based on an idea by Andy Arnold

Synopsis:

Imagine that there are two half-hour shows, one played out in the Ladies toilet, the other in the Gents. Imagine that each show consists of four five-minute monologues, written and performed by some of the finest theatre artists in Scotland. And then imagine that you experience each of these snippets alone, face to face with a single actor, either in a toilet cubicle, or somewhere around the wash-basins. This is the Arches 15th anniversary show Spend A Penny; and it makes an extraordinary, intense and challenging 21st-century theatre experience, sometimes as rich and intimate as a private moment with a sister or best friend, sometimes as grotesque and vivid as a trip to the underworld, in a painting by Brueghel or Bosch.

My Romantic History

"If you haven't met someone by the time you graduate, you're going to marry some idiot from your work. It's that simple. Do you know how they get animals to breed in captivity? They put them in the same cage." Office romances are tricky. One moment you're colleagues, then a quick grope after Friday night drinks and suddenly you're in a relationship. When Tom and Amy get together after an office social, they find themselves living in each other's pockets. But it's not their lack of chemistry that's the problem: it's that neither of them can quite get over their childhood sweethearts. A brand new comedy about love, loss and laminating machines.

Part of Sixty-Six Books: 21st-century writers speak to the King James Bible. Play is a response to the King James Bible book of 1 Thessalonians

Pauls First Voicemail To Thessa

The King James Version of the Bible (KJV) is a foundation stone of the English language. The KJV was composed as a collective project and written to be spoken. Sixty-Six Books has been created, in the spirit of the original, in the same way. Pulpit to print; stage to page; mediated through many forms oral and written, the KJV has, since its inception, been a fundamental part of written and spoken English. This is a work that has travelled to every continent of the globe. It has been shared as a melodic instrument of inspiration, illumination and mutual understanding; and it has also been wielded as a tool of colonial oppression. Sixty-Six Books is a fresh interpretation of the KJV for the new millennium, celebrating and challenging the traditions and achievements of this great work on the occasion of its 400th anniversary. The curators of this project have gathered together a formidable and inspiring line-up of the best established and emerging writing talent to produce a new version of the KJV for thetwenty-first century. Each writer has created anew a book of the KJV - as prose, poetry, drama, performance, song, or ground-breaking digital form. Each writer has spoken back to the KJV with untrammeled inventiveness of the imagination. The voices of Sixty-Six Books, drawn from across five continents, innovate, transmute, transpose, reinvent and talk back to four hundredyears of history. All the works that make up Sixty-Six Books are written to be spoken. Culminating in major performance events at the Bush Theatre and Westminster Abbey in 2011 in London, Sixty-Six Books is a contribution towards the mutual curiosity, tolerance, and force of collective enterprise and shared humanity that characterizes the international and ancient arts of writing and spoken performance

Smalltown

Things are about to get a whole lot crazy! Created by three of Scotland's most dynamic writers, Smalltown tells the unexpected tale of what happens when a polluted water supply turns its residents crazy: from zombies in the frozen food aisle, to oversexed teenagers releasing the animal within, to a dangerous game of Russian roulette on Girvan beach. Smalltown is the story of nature wreaking her revenge and unleashing all sorts of comedic carnage. Find yourself trapped in three separate stories of Smalltown life before you decide how the story ends!

Wall, The

It's summertime, it's Stewarton, and the kids are hanging around the wall that is, well, their favorite hangout. Tall, skinny Barry is waiting for the results from his second try at Highers. His wee sister Norma has nicked some of their Dad's hash, and has had it stolen in turn by Barry's wide-boy friend Rab. And lovely goth-styled Michelle has one eye on Barry, and the other on her Mum's relationship with live-in "Auntie" Alice, about which she's beginning to realise a few things.
- Joyce MacMillan, Scotsman
