Synopsis: | Is it possible for the theater to be truly topical? That's the inspiration for aMios' NYCycle series: writing plays in the here and now to serve as living, breathing history of New York in the moment. Here's the process: 4 times a year, 3 playwrights create 3 30-minute plays themed around an assigned month, set in New York City for a pre-selected cast. For this cycle, the plays must be set in September, October, and November 2010, include the quote "There are so many people from everywhere" and reflect the immediate future in relation to the theme "ConsumerCreditCultureClash." What does ConsumerCreditCultureClash mean? Why is it all squeezed together? I think it's the dominant anxiety in NY right now. With our country's economic health predicated by our ability to borrow money in small or large sums to fuel our consumer-based economy, people's lives are in a squeeze. It's redefining who we are. We'll see what the plays say, states artistic director Christian Haines. | |||||
