A pastime at university, student theatre, became an unlikely career when Simon began performing at Mlebourne's Pram Factory and La Mama theatres in 1980. He wrote his first play No Half Measures based on the friendship of Nancy Cunard and Brian Howard shortly after. It was performed at La Mama in 1984 directed by Rob Meldrum. Simon did not have another play performed until 19 years later when Dennis Moore directed Slide Night also at La Mama. In the time between Simon worked as an actor and a freelance journalist with the Melbourne Age and other papers. He also wrote Didn't You Use To be Someone?: True confessions of Australia's most famouse unknown actor (Allen & Unwin). Centring on a touring production of Midsummer Night's Dream by the Bell Shakespeare Co, it killed his acting career stone dead. That's his story anyway.
