| ||||||
Genre: | Play/Drama | |||||
| Parts: | Male | - | Female | - | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | - | |||||
Synopsis: | The Green Desert was written early in 1966, over a period of about 5 weeks. Though set in 1798, and allowing licence historically correct, it is not a historical piece. No play can be. As Goethe puts it 'we lend them our minds.' For myself, a play - to be a play -- reflects it's own time. THE DESERT was probably written in a reaction in the hypocritical and emotional celebrations of the 1916 rebellion. If this is so, and the initial impulse has been sublimated, artistically, then the work has significance. . All rebellions, all implimented ideas exaust themselves and are slowly taken over by and claimed by the species they rebelled snd shouted against. (Proof? The decendents of the mob who shouted against Synge have been in active control of THE ABBEY for over thirty years.) The importance of the play may be that for the first time it sweeps away sentiment and dishonesty: after thirty years of it. Believe me, O'Casey would have had a tougher passage - ten years later. - this play was produced in Belfast April 1967 Mary O'Mallay was running The Lyric. A cast of 12. It was well reviewed - Irish Times etc. At this point he had disagreement with Peggy Ramsay who did not want to handle it, she said that she was not suggesting that he was celebrating cruelty and violence but the play was pretty packed with this, and much of it would be enjoyed for the wrong reasons. His new agent, Doglas Rae(CMA) however gave it to Bernard Miles who found it ' Dramatic at all levels, passionate and immensely truthful' The Mermaid Theatre bought the performing rights but in the end did not get the play on. | |||||
