Doug Grissom is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia. His plays have been produced at many regional theatres, including INTAR in New York City, TheatreVirginia, the Source Theatre in Washington D.C., Mill Mountain Theatre, and Theatre 40 in Los Angeles. He has won several awards, including the Virginia Playwriting Award (Tocoi Light), Mill Mountain New Play Competition (Ned & Dan's History Emporium), and the Outstanding New Play Award at the Washington Theatre Festival (Year of Pilgrimage). His educational theatre piece on acquaintance rape, But I Said No (co-written with Margaret Baldwin), has received national acclaim and has toured extensively for the last ten years on college campuses around the country. He has written two educational pieces for the Charlottesville Sexual Assault Resource center. I Never Saw It Coming, which deals with teen assault, tours high schools in Virginia and has been seen by over 20,000 students so far;Ear of the Beholder is his most recent work, addressing sexual harassment in middle school. In 1998 his play Deep Down was produced Off-Broadway at the INTAR Theatre, and received positive reviews from Fintan O'Toole in the New York Daily News, John Simon in New York Magazine,and Time Out New York, among others.Deep Down went on to be produced at the Venture Theatre in Philadelphia and the Main Street Theatre in Houston. In 2002 his one-acts Contact and Undress Me Clarancewere published by Dramatic Publishing Company in an anthology of new American playwriting called 25 IN 10. His work is also published by Playscripts, Inc. Mr. Grissom is a co-founder of Offstage Theatre in Charlottesville, Virginia, a theatre devoted to the performance of original works in site-specific venues.
