Synopsis: | Pushkin's volatile genius, which produced his best-known work, the verse novel Eugene Onegin, may. have been cut short at the age of 37 by a duel in 1837, but he managed to pack in so-much womanising, gambling, political subversion and artistic success that there's probably enough material for several costume dramas. Freedman certainly strives to cram in a lot of information about "the Russian Don Juan" by peppering her dialogue with biographical detail. But the play takes a more interesting turn when she begins to interweave Pushkin's life with one of his better-known short stories, The Queen of Spades. A chilling tale about an impecunious officer's obsessive attempts to wrest the secret of winning at cards from an old countess, it not only provides some atmospheric drama but another perspective on Pushkin himself. She also manages to touch on the curious relationship between the artist and his work when one of the protagonists in The Queen of Spades defies his creator and takes the story in a direction that Pushkin hadn't even foreseen.

Synopsis: | Rough Music opens in London in 1892. In a court of law two women are tried and convicted. The third case begins: the trial of Jessie Sanders. We see her story. Jessie is a young northern girl from a harsh and oppressive background. All she wants is to escape and she sets her sights on London. Fleeced by a conwoman, she takes work in a factory, where she learns to use her wits to avoid the advances of the boss who tries to seduce her. She gets to sing in a pub and finds her true vocation: to make her way in the world as an entertainer. Along the way she encounters a succession of wouldbe lovers, a troupe of strolling players who perform illegally and a woman passing as a man who unwittingly sets off the rough music' of the title. Weaving expertly between comedy and drama the play draws upon the rich variety of forms of popular entertainment of the day: popular songs, cheap novelettes, penny gaffs, standup comedians and melodrama.
