Betsy wants Carl to leave Jane and marry her - something he continually promises to do, but never does. When he inadvertently overhears Carl and Betsy on the baby monitor and learns of their affair (and her frustrations), Jim suggests to Betsy that they fake a torrid love affair with each other. This way they can see Carl and Jane socially as a couple. Betsy can use these occasions to make Carl jealous, while Jim woos Jane on the sly. But just as the plan begins to work and the Carl/Jane marriage is on the verge of break-up, Jim and Betsy discover that their "phony" love affair is a lot more real than they think.

TIM works in law firms only when he has to. His mission in life is to complete the book he's been working on for eight years, a supposedly spiritual masterpiece so original he will not show a word of it to anyone, lest it be corrupted by commerce. Peggy is as disdainful of his artistic pretensions as he is of her corporate careerism. Yet the attraction between them is strong. TIM lets her read his book and she is profoundly affected. They fall in love. But Peggy cannot accept that Tim is an unpublished writer. She begins secretly shopping his book to every publisher in town. The only one to bite is GABRIELLA ROSSINI, a tough-talking and very pregnant publisher who sees the book for what it really is: a New-Age business book about scheming your way to the top of the corporate ladder.
