Synopsis: | It was supposed to be a simple "paper marriage" but is an act of kindness inherently good? The plan is to get a green card for Johannie, a young woman from the Dominican Republic, so that she can provide for her poverty-ridden family. But this "noble" act forces first generation Dominican-American Chris, along with his American girlfriend, Gabby, to confront the complicated and often painful debate over immigration in the United States. Fraught with the challenges of family loyalties, cultural dynamics, personal ethics, and the trials of love in a modern world, When Santo Domingo Isn't Enough asks, can we truly assimilate while maintaining our roots? In tandem with the changing demographics of New York City, and many major cities in the United States, this play also reflects the ever-growing presence of languages besides English. Written partially in Spanish, the play is at once accessible to English-only speakers, bilingual speakers and even those who are just starting to learn the English language. | |||||
