Synopsis: | Set in Regency London, this is the story of the poet Lord Byron, his ever-increasing notoriety and his steps to appease Society by marrying respectably. He is aided by Lady Melbourne, who promotes her niece Annabella Milbank as a suitable candidate. However, Annabella refuses. Meanwhile, Byron's half-sister Augusta has come to London and she and Byron are passionately drawn to one another, starting a torrid relationship which is doomed. Finally, Annabella agrees to marry Byron but with disastrous results. With the debtors on his heels and facing the ignominy of his sexual life being dragged through the Courts, Byron agrees to a formal separation from Annabella, parts broken-hearted from the love of his life, Augusta, and quits England for good. This by turns amusing, serious and moving treatment of Byron's flawed personality and the ultimate tragedy it engenders was seen at Barons Court Theatre, London, in 2004. The play contains strong language. | |||||
