Synopsis: | James Holby MP is a true man of the people - or so he would have his constituents believe. Intent on furthering his career, he plans to marry Pamela, the child-like daughter of front bench MP Robert Renshaw. But Holby's first visit to his prospective in-laws is far from successful. For it's not Robert who greets him but Pamela's mother, the astute Mrs Renshaw. What follows reveals a past event so scandalous that, with mounting horror, Holby realises that to marry Pamela could only result in the end of his career.

Synopsis: | In 1745 the law decreed that a man could take a stick to his wife, provided it was no thicker than his thumb. Mrs Farrington had little interest in the ancient 'Rule of Thumb'. It was part of our uneducated past. Today, surely, only the lower classes or illiterates beat their wives? So, when her younger daughter arrives unexpectedly, battered and bruised, Mrs Farrington believes implicitly her story - she fell down an escalator. Except, as her elder daughter eventually points out, the store in question doesn`t have an escalator. . .
