Drew Chappell writes about the intersections of adult and child "worlds." He believes that they are not as separate as we usually believe. Drew's plays have been performed and presented across the US, including at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. In addition to writing plays, Drew teaches theatre courses at the college level and publishes research on adult conceptions of childhood as revealed through literature, film, games, and school curriculum. He is also active in the American Alliance for Theater and Education (AATE) support organization.

Synopsis: | Julie's Summer Album takes place in the summer of 1995 on an island off the coast of Washington State. Julie, a 12 year old girl, visits her Aunt Rhetta, an accountant and local "personality." Julie and Rhetta struggle to understand each other's interests and values; Julie especially tries to introduce Rhetta to the possibilities of the internet and global communication. After being stood up on her first date in months, Rhetta drinks heavily and is unable to supervise Julie's visit to an online chat room. In the chat room, an unknown user sexually propositions Julie, terrifying her. Rhetta and her neighbor (a teenage girl unlike Julie) are left to undo the damage caused to Julie, reaching her through the lyrics of the John Lennon song "Julia" and a sincere offer of friendship. | |||||
