Born Alvin Allison Carmines Jr in Hampton Virginia on July 25th 1936. Al's father was a captain on a fishing trawler and his strict Protestant mother a teacher. He showed a talent for music at an early age and won a music scholarship but decided instead to go into the ministry - he enrolled at Union Theological Seminary and earned degrees - Bachelor of Divinty and Master of Sacred Theology. He was hired as assistant minister at Judson Memorial Church , New York. The senior minister asked him to help found a theatre company at the church with playwright Robert Nichols. He took up composing and acting.He provided music and lyrics to numerous musicals and in all won five Obie Awards - including a lifetime achievement. He suffered an aneurysm in 1977 and underwent a long operation and months of therapy. He died on August 9th 2005 and is survived by his partner Paul Rounsaville.
