Born in Ilford, Essex in 1941, Campbell studied drama at Rada. He started out professionally as an impresario, before branching into writing and directing for the stage and television. He was perhaps best known for founding the Ken Campbell Roadshow in 1971, a small drama group that performed in bars, and which showcased talents such as Bob Hoskins and Sylvester McCoy. It unearthed Campbell's talent for crazy storytelling and surreal coups de theatre. After working in rep for Richard Eyre at the Nottingham Playhouse, Campbell set up the Science Fiction Theatre of Liverpool in 1976, which put on a series of spectacular shows, including The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the eight-hour Illuminatus! (which starred Jim Broadbent), and the 22-hour The Warp, which had a set designed by Tim Albery and pioneered the art of promenade theatre.Campbell met his wife, the actor Prunella Gee, when she appeared in Illuminatus! They married in 1978, and although they subsequently divorced, they remained close. He is survived by Gee, their daughter Daisy, a writer and director, and two grandchildren, Dixie and Django

Synopsis: | Describing Ken Campbell as eccentric is like describing clouds as fluffy. It's a fair starting point, but hardly the whole caboodle. Still, it's not a branding he shies away from. Wearing a suit decorated with what looks like white paint, but which turns out to be guano from his parrot Doris, he stands on a stage decorated with framed examples of Doris's other artful peckings and droppings. He uses a big metal press to squeeze himself fresh pomegranate juice. And he strides on spitting out the declension "bonus, bona, bonum. . ." in his unmistakable nasal boom before firing out stories to support his latest hobby horse: hyphenation. No, this isn't some .Lynne-Trusson-ice punctuation workshop, but rather an exercise in remixing some of Campbell's stories to invigorating effect. And hinting at the connectedness of all things while's he at it. Ancient hardback in hand, he refers to an opening paragraph by the long-forgotten author Charles Fort in which every word is hyphenated. This, Fort argued, was because nothing is wholly separate from anything else: "A full stop is a lie, or else a hyphen coming straight at you." Initially, this seems like just the latest nifty notion that the veteran theatrical enthusiast recounts in this apparently scattershot show. His stories through six decades of larking about tell us of his all-knowing Latin master, who was in Hitler Youth iong ago, when it was kind of OK". He tells us of the extroverted eccentricity that comes as standard in St Johns, Newfoundland; how Jeremy Beadle has the best library in Britain, in a "secret street" in North London. Eventually, though, he binds his strands together. Whether or not everything is connected in the universe, it certainly is in Campbell's show. | |||||
