Michael Clive "Micky" Burn, MC (11 December 1912 3 September 2010) won a scholarship to read classics at Oxford after schooling at Winchester College, but left after a year. Troubled by the social injustice caused by contemporary unemployment, he travelled to Germany in 1935 to consider the ideas of National Socialism. He met Hitler and was a guest at the Nuremburg party rally, but returned to Britain disenchanted to work on The Times. During the War, he served in the Commandos, winning the MC and was taken prisoner in 1942, subsequently interred in Colditz. After the war, he became a novelist, poet and playwright and returned to The Times as a correspondent in Vienna, covering the postwar sociopolitical turmoil including the trial of Cardinal Mindszenty.
