Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | Written and Performed By: Ryan Higgins, Andy Gricevich, Rick Burkhardt
Synopsis: | An extended meditation on Act Three, Scene Six of King Lear, Storm Still takes place inside an abandoned school where three children are trapped and taking refuge from the raging war outside. Years pass, and these children become grown men who have spent their lives performing King Lear, unsupervised, over and over again. After so many performances, the mad King has developed a theory about the purpose of theatre, which he debates with his Fool/psychologist. In Storm Still, The Nonsense Company use their musical sensibilities to manipulate sound and Shakespeare's classic text to consider madness, childhood, war, and the vast history of and various treatments for insanity.

Genre: | Piece | |||||
| Parts: | Male | 3 | Female | - | ||
Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | created and performed by Dave Molloy, Alec Duffy, Rick Burkhardt
Synopsis: | Three Pianos is a theatrical explosion of Franz Schubert's Winterreise song cycle by three major artists of the indie theater community-Dave Malloy of Banana Bag & Bodice, playwright/director Alec Duffy of Hoi Polloi, and composer/playwright Rick Burkhardt of the Nonsense Company. The piece takes the form of a musical lecture/demo gone astray, with the three creators each at their own piano, leading the audience through their respective passions for Schubert's famous song cycle on winter heartbreak. Compositional mischief, shifting rivalries, whimsical dances, and some unfortunate butchery of the German language ensue. Ultimately, the three separate understandings of Schubert's mastery and impact collide, and what starts as a reasoned exploration of the music ends in mayhem. Filled with fantastical touches and inventive orchestrations of Schubert's music, Three Pianos is a colorful and imaginative piece of chaos that brings these three talents together onstage for the first time.
