With 35 years of cross-cultural theater work, I established 2 theaters, was selected as an Artist-in-Residence in 4 states, and have had the good fortune to have collaborated with performers, writers, choreographers, and mixed media artists from all walks of life, throughout the United States, Canada, Turkey, and Eastern Europe. My stage adaptation of Kurban Said's world famous novel "Ali and Nino" (published in 30 languages, including Braille) was funded by the New York State Council for the Arts. "Ali and Nino" highlights the cross-cultural romance between a young Azerbaijani patriot, a Muslim, and a bright, witty Christian girl from Georgia. Prophetic and relevant to events in the Near East today, "Ali and Nino" has had readings in Maryland, New York, Canada, and Azerbeijan. My short plays of humor, satire and wit include "The Madness of the American Sentry" (the Statue of Liberty jumps off her pedestal into New York harbor for a career change); "The Natural Membrane of the Lamb" (a down-to-earth Angel runs away with the wife of the leader of the Good Lord's Coalition); "Theory of Relativity" (a comic monologue for a dancer impersonating Einstein); "Eminent Domain" (a satirical take off on the brave new world of corporative control); "The Angel in the Balcony" (a comic fantasy), and "The Butcher's Scandal" ( a farce about a butcher who sells sick chickens as kosher). I also developed performance workshops on "Journey Into Community Legends". Workshops that highlight acts of courage and triumph in community lives. In short, my work has not been done behind closed doors.

Synopsis:

Ali and Nino by Kurban Said is a highly regarded novel that has been published in 32 languages (including Braille). I adapted it for the stage with funding from the New York Foundation for the Arts. A Romeo and Juliet story between Ali Khan Shirvanshir, a young, mercurial Muslim patriot from Azerbaijan, and Nino Kalinin, a bright, witty Christian girl from Georgia, the play highlights their quest for enlighten, their breaking down barriers related to nationality, religion, gender and age, and the deepening of their relationship against odds. "Ali and Nino" uses fluid staging, multiple casting, music, mime, puppetry, dance, and multi-media effects, to heighten its theatrical impact.

Notes:

Divine Intervention Release 2 works best as a satirical theatrical duet with The Madness of the American Sentry"

Synopsis:

Divine Intervention Release 2. A down-to-earth Angel crashes into the bedroom of the wife of the Leader of the Good Lord's Coalition, and runs away with her. "Just who do you think you are, busting into my bedroom like that!" snaps Marilyn Gridlock, outraged. "You're not one of those are you?" "Look lady, don't get in an uproar," the Angel declares, snapping dust off his wings. "The Good Lord Above disappeared. He got sick and tired of everyone claiming him as one of their own. So he decided to knock off for a couple of centuries. If you got that kind of power, why not? Why work yourself to death trying to do what nobody wants to do for themselves? I'd get into a different frame of mind, if I were you". An uproarious comedy with a slapstick dimension..
