But as the women stoically strive to make a living in a competitive market, their personal lives start to crumble. The Girlfriend Experience is created entirely from conversations recorded inside an actual brothel, edited and replicated on stage in all their uncanny verisimilitude

Synopsis: Armed with her microphone, Alecky Blythe has been all over Brussels to meet Bruxellois, both native and adopted: Flemish, Walloons, recent immigrants and Eurocrats. Each is affected, to some extent by the EU quarter, by questions of language, identity, integration and the future. Their stories are recorded in a form of English that is constantly evolving, coloured by the numerous cultural influences which give modern-day Brussels its strength and originality. Alecky Blythe's method involves blending in with the crowd, listening, reaping opinion, mulling over what she has gathered and putting the results together. She makes use of a very particular staging technique, 'verbatim theatre', to reflect back an image of the Bruxellois that may well be truer than real life.
