Eric Bland is a writer, director, performer, and producer. He was born on November 17, 1979 in Richmond, VA, where he was also raised. He attended Princeton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English with a Creative Writing concentration. He later earned an M.A. in Writing for Performance from Goldsmiths College, University of London. As an actor, Eric has performed in his own work and for a number of downtown theater directors (Michael Gardner, Matt Gray, Brian Enk, Jeff Lewonczyk, and Shannon Sindelar). He is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the Old Kent Road Theater, a collective that sets evocative ensemble pieces against the chaos and concrete of New York City, all the while seeking authentic, idiosyncratic performance that blends the absurd and the emotional with the new and the lonely (other members: Scott Eckert, Abernathy Bland, Charlie Hewson, Hollis Witherspoon, Jesse Liebman, Victoria Tate, and Siobhan Doherty). The OKRT has presented work at various downtown theater venues, including The Brick Theater, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, Dixon Place, and The Bushwick Starr. Upcoming performances include Are We Bourgeois Mon Amour? (A Psycho's Analysis) at the Bushwick Starr in May and Jeannine's Abortion: A Play in One Trimester at The Brick Theater in June. Eric lives in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. His play Death at Film Forum is published in Plays and Playwrights 2009.

Synopsis: | Eric Bland's play finds three women and one man compulsively dissecting the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, human rights, and the gender identification rules of Vermont. It's as if four anxious, petit bourgeois strangers find themselves at 8am in the backyard of a mutual friend's August retreat, a half-mile from the coast of Cherbourg or Seattle. Or it's as if four precocious children were abandoned in a Math/Science Center on a rainy, late-autumn Saturday morning. Or as if people do theater, in 2012, despite. . .things.

| Parts: | Male | 8 | Female | 7 | ||

Notes: | - | |||||
Synopsis: | Emancipatory Politics: A Romantic Tragedy (EP: ART) flings a large ensemble into a traumatic struggle to create an opening for sprawling thought and intimate embraces. Committed to the comedy of desire, the physicality of loss, and the potential for new spaces, this total-theater, contemporary ecstasy searches for the inextinguishable kernel of the radical-possible. EP: ART takes its cue from contemporary philosophical tracts, recent movements in leftist politics, and the very real search for meaning surfacing in the lives of 20 and 30-something contemporary New Yorkers. Its collage-like form is open and sprawling but energy is focused on the creation of a movement forward, connectivity, and a sense of journey. Amid the societal struggle (the emancipatory political struggle) comes the romantic tragedy (both the social one of our attempts and failures, and the very personal ones of finding connection in this time and place). Amid the struggle love emerges.

Synopsis: | When Scottie returns home to Virginia from his NYC sojourn for the marriage/departure of his chronically negligent mother, he discovers his biologically-ruined brother wilting, his emotionally-untethered brother firing, and his baby 'brother' Tippy becoming a woman and the family's final hope. Tippy's tough-as-nails best bud Ruby, a Nurse fallen from the pages of Chekhov, and Scottie's cosmopolitan girlfriend Virginia round out this frenetic yet heart-blooming world. Told in evocative, free-wheeling scenes, The Protestants penetrates the rural, central Virginian landscape with characters of big desire, personality, and problems-one part The Royal Tenenbaums, one part Faulkner. It delivers a South where pain and humor intertwine, with both aiming for the last laugh; where the need and the notion of God lurks throughout to order and illuminate things forgiven, things forsaken
