Thomas Bernhard was born Nicolaas Thomas Bernhard on February 9th 1931. His parents were unmarried and he was mainly brought up by his grandparents in Vienna. His mother married and they moved to Traunstein in Bavaria. Bernhard's grandfather wanted the boy to have artistic schooling but he attended numerous schools before quitting in 1948 to become an apprentice grocer. Suffering from tuberculosis he spent time in a sanatorium from 1949 to 1951. His mother died in 1950 and the same year he met and fell in love with Hedwig Stavianicek who was thirty-seven years his senior. She encouraged Thomas to write and he trained as an actor - but his lung condition meant he had to give it up. He became a full time writer. He died on February 12th 1989 but his death was not made public until after the funeral. In his will he prohibited the performance of his plays after his death.

He wrote Heldenplatz in 1988 as a response to the fiftieth anniversary of the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria by Hitlers Germany. Highly controversial in Austria, the play concerns a Jewish professor who returns to Vienna after the Second World War and discovers that his fellow Austrians are as anti-semitic as ever.
