| 48 different characters appear in this explosive show about a young African woman seeking asylum in England. Following the mass murder of her family, a distressed and beaten African woman is interrogated at London's Heathrow Airport. Unable to explain how she arrived there, she is locked up in the UK's national refugee detention center, Campsfield House near Oxford. There she becomes involved in the protests that led to the trial of the Campsfield Nine, a group of refugees who were accused and acquitted of rioting at the center. "For the short piece that I wrote for the Red Room, I read hundreds of stories of refugees seeking asylum in this country; the Refugee Council provided me with some of the source material. All of these were sad, but some were sickening, so horrifying as to be almost unbearable. Inspired by these terrible stories, I created my story of The Bogus Woman." Kay Adshead, 2000. | |||||

Synopsis: | The Four Ladies gang is the scourge of the neighbourhood, with lives that revolve around tagging (spraying graffiti), the local pub, pulling and clubbing. Everything explodes when the gentle Lady God, with an increasingly dangerous habit, attempts to pay for 'stuff' with a sordid encounter in the bushes with one of the Crew (the local usurped boy gang), who just happens to belong to Missy Cat, leader of the rival Pussy Posse. The showdown that follows is a titanic battle of wits versus fists, female cunning versus male muscle. Violent crime amongst women is rising at a phenomenal rate. Lady Chill is an examination of that rise, intended to provoke debate about what constitutes real female power. Featuring an R&B/Hip Hop back beat, with live Sitar and Tabla. Strong language and adult themes. Suitable for 15+ | |||||
