Phil Young was born in Liverpool and works as a freelance writer and director. He went to John Hamilton High School in Everton, and then graduated from Southlands College with a B. Ed (Hons Education Drama, Dance. He then completed an M.A. in Drama at Leeds University. In 1975 he co-found Mutable Theatre, touring London community centres with original devised work. The following year he was the inaugural winner of the R.S.C. Buzz Goodbody Award for a production of Gerog Kaiser's GAS, which showed at the Workshop Theatre Leeds, Traverse Edinburgh and Roundhouse London.
