MALACHY WALSH started his writing career freelancing for the Washington Post and has worked as an advertising copywriter for over 10 years in NY, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Denver and San Francisco. Recently, some of his advertising work was featured on NBCs TODAY SHOW and was inducted into the NY MOMA archives by the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP). He started playwriting in the mid-1990s and produced work in San Francisco where he founded the Iron Workers Local 202 Theatre Company. Working at the EXIT in San Francisco's Tenderloin, he produced a series called "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN& THE OPPOSITE SEX" featuring the work of local writers writing for, well, the opposite sex. He also worked with Michael Gene Sullivan of the SF Mime Troupe on STEW! (by Cameron Galloway) and ENVELOPE BOY (co-writer).In 2001 he received a Bay Area Emerging Writer Award from Playground for IOWA which was subsequently published and then promptly moved to New York to complete an MFA in playwriting at Columbia University. In 2002, SMALLER, about 2 advertising creatives struggling with the end of the dot com boom, was produced at the NOH Space in SF. The same year, its companion piece, THE CHAIR, about two advertising women dealing with the dot com aftermath received the Patricia Neill Emerging Writer Award at the National Arts Club in NY and Honorable Mention at the Bay Area Playwright's Festival. In 2003, THE CHAIR was presented at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca as part of the New Works Summer Play Lab. In 2004, he received the Overall Excellence in Playwriting Award from the NY Inter national Fringe Festival for THE CHAIR. He's a two-time semi-finalist for the Princess Grace Award for FIRE BABY which won the John Golden Award for Playwriting at Columbia University and was given a staged reading with Estelle Parsons, Billy Crudup and the late John Seitz, directed by Trip Cullman at the DR2 in NY. In 2005, he worked with Relentless Theatre as collaborator and co-creator (with Hayley Finn, Gary Winter, Marjorie Louis and Olivia Honnegger) of JIGSAW NATION - a piece of documentary theater exploring the American identity - first presented as a workshop at the NY Fringe Festival and later South Coast Rep, the Playwrights Center, Actors Theater of Louisville and elsewhere. His short plays have been done at the Atlantic Theatre as part of their NYU affiliated acting program showcases, Dixon Place and, in San Francisco, at the Traveling Jewish Theatre, Noh Space, EXIT and EXIT Left, the Magic Theatre, Bay Front Theatre, the Loraine Hansberry Theatre, 450 Geary Studios, the Marsh and the Z Space Studios. SLEEPERS was a finalist for the Heideman Award at the Humana Festival in 2004-5. His play DRESSING THE GIRL, about a man who gives a woman the same dress over and over again eventhough it doesn't fit, was workshopped at the 78th Street Theatre Lab in 2005. That same year it was a finalist for New Work NOW! Last fall, the play was given a site-specific reading at the Montmartre Dress Shop in NY's Time Warner Center. His most recent project, BEYOND THE OWING, has been developed with Clubbed Thumb in NY, PCPA TheatreFest in California and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. A reading of the play is scheduled at the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis for 2008.He has also written several screenplays (UNIONVILLE; THE MONEY HORSE; SF) and has been a past semi-finalist for the Chesterfield Writers Film Project and a Nicholls Fellowship quarterfinalist.
