Born on July 22, 1912, W. Edwin Ver Becke has spent over fifty years in the creative arts. He was once teacher at the University of Minnesota and active in the early Little Theatre movement. He was Founder-Director of the Sausalito Little Theatre, San Francisco Community Theatre, and the Laguna Beach Drama Readers. In 1951, A.N.T.A. published his manual, Little Theatre Structure. He is also a lecturer, poet, a painter having taken awards and shown his work in leading museums and galleries. His plays have been seen at Little Theatre productions and the Playwrights Theater in Hollywood. His work has been published in Christian Science Monitor, Hemispheres, School Arts, V.V.V., Eros, Circle and numerous avant garde magazines. He is a specialist in short avant garde plays. As an artist has designed stage sets. Recipient: Citation, Maxwell Anderson Awards.

VerBecke lived in Sausalito, or at least had a couple of art galleries in Sausalito, in the late 1940s and perhaps into the early 1950s. One was called the Little Gallery and the other, the Seashore Gallery. VerBecke, together with his friend Bern Porter, who ran the Contemporary Gallery and Schillerhaus, were among the early promoters of San Francisco Abstract Expressionist painters, who were having difficulty finding galleries to show their work. He, along with Bern Porter, was actively engaged in trying to promote "culture" in general in Sausalito. He also founded a little theatre company in Sausalito. VerBecke opened his first Gallery, the Little Gallery by the Sea, in October or November 1945. It was his stated intention to use the gallery as a center for the arts and artists of Marin and to feature the works of distinguished American painters as well as loan exhibitions from artists from abroad. For the first month he showed artist's water colors of historic New Orleans where in 1937 he organized a children's school of arts and crafts. The article lists coming exhibits including such varied things as Antiques from old Sausalito Homes, arts and crafts from Ecuador, and Surrealistic Art in America. A subsequent issue of the newspaper indicates that he has private students in water painting. Note that it was quite common, at least in Sausalito in those days, for artists to be involved in both writing and painting, so the fact that he is apparently now remembered as a playwright is not that surprising.
