Synopsis: | This is a multimedia one-woman-show that, with a dose of amusement, reveals the racial conflicts that weight heavily on Belen, a young Latina whose sin is to have curly or 'bad' hair. Belen is a member of a distinguished family and her life would be normal if there were no doubts about her origin. The reason of the doubts is her cinnamon colored skin and her untamable and rebellious hair. Belen resorts to the hair-straightening and other cosmetics tricks to gain acceptance to a society in which all have African roots. Lagrimas negras, the new-one-woman show by Eva Cristina Vasquez uses elements from Latin American melodrama to emphasize the comic side of the character life situations. The radio soap opera, the TV and radio ads carry us through the story. The playwright/actor incorporates music, everyday sayings, and expressions that perpetuate prejudice in our society. This play is linked with multimedia art: film, animation, video and slides are incorporated to complement the actor's role." In Spanish with written English synopsis.

Notes: | - | |||||
Synopsis: | This production is based on Prosper Merimee's novella and takes a cue from Bizet's famous opera for its emphasis on dance and tropical rhythms. The characters and locations are entirely original, depicting aspects of the multiple identities that converge as the unpredictable essence of New York City. Sunday performances at 3pm are followed by talk backs with the cast and Maritere Arce, lawyer from the Immigrant Service Office at the Labor Department. Carmen's world is that of illegal laborers, squatters, arranged marriages for citizenship, intercultural relationships, bohemia, and a hectic nightlife. The story takes a twist when Carmen attempts to advance her questionable legal agenda by seducing an immigration officer with love and lust. It's an entirely original adaptation about those who are struggling to survive and surviving to struggle, those that are exploited while being marginalized, and those who work more for less. Performances are in Spanish, with English subtitles.
