VANISHING POINT   (1999 - )

Vanishing Point was formed in 1999 with the principle aim of telling wonderful stories. In order to take our audiences on adventures into strange and beautiful landscapes, we wanted to make theatre that focussed on the live event, to create an experience that was both visceral and entertaining. Our first production was an adaptation of Maurice Maeterlinck's play, The Sightless. Tired of seeing plays that could just as easily have been on television, we decided to abandon the visual aspect altogether: to perform the play in complete darkness. The audience were led hand in hand into a completely pitch black space. Around them - in three dimensions - sounds, words, smells and atmosphere were conjured to tell the thrilling story of a group of blind people lost and apparently stranded in a strange wilderness by someone else's design. Since then our work has developed as we continue on our own adventure. What remains constant is a commitment to tell remarkable stories, to enter worlds unlike our own and to collaborate with artists from many disciplines and cultures. We combine the discipline of work with the freedom of play in the firm belief that one leads to the other. Consequently we treat our rehearsal room as a playground, but a playground with rules, routines, and where an ethos of hard graft is instilled.

Synopsis:

The future's here. It's a brave new world, but wherever there's a world there's an underworld: muggers, smugglers, prostitutes, thieves. Nobody plays by the rules, least of all MacHeath - bandit, hedonist, superhero to some, villain to others. Among imitators and wannabes, he's the genuine article. But where he goes, trouble is sure to follow. MacHeath has married Polly Peachum. But he fancies Lucy Lockit. Lucy Lockit fancies MacHeath, but Polly doesn't want to share. Mr Peachum wants MacHeath's head, and so does Mr Lockit. And so does the law. With so many enemies, it's hard to tell who your friends are. John Gay's 17th century play The Beggar's Opera has been reconfigured to the not-so distant future. A dark, seedy, absurd, visually rich and cruelly comic co-production featuring new music from Alasdair Macrae and A Band Called Quinn, cutting edge production design and a large cast of leading performers

Based on Stephen Hawking's bestselling book, A Brief History of Time is about the universe, time and the urge to explore that leads humankind on a potentially infinite search for knowledge and ultimate answers. Embarking in groups of twelve, audiences begin a visceral journey around the spaces of Tramway. They encounter performance, animation and a sound and video installation, before indulging in a sinister game of cards which separates winners from losers. Winners are led one by one into the vast pitch darkness of Tramway 1, where faint images emerge from the darkness, before being led blindfolded into a nearby church. Here they are reunited with the losers, who have been on a journey of their own, for the final sequence.

Synopsis:

Glimpse was created through six weeks working with dementia patients and their carers at a day centre in the Scottish borders. Glimpse is the story of an archaeologist who has forgotten her greatest discovery. Affected by dementia, she lives in a world where her television talks to her and flowers grow from the walls of her room. Four hundred years before, an old woman is stranded with her son in the bleak wilderness of Sutherland, surrounded by the peat bogs that eventually claim her life. As the dawn emerges, so does the connection between these ghostly figures, centuries apart but strangely linked by an umbilical chord that spans the ages.

Synopsis:

Home Hindrance is new site-specific theatre piece and web-based film performed in a flat at the top of a Glasgow tower block. Only six people will be allowed in the audience each night, making for an intimate and intense night out as they are led through the flat, finding a different character in each room. This emotionally compelling piece weaves together such diverse themes as chronic sickness, soft porn magazines, weird Japanese food and Abba's 'SOS'. In Home Hindrance, life at the top of a Glasgow tower block becomes melded with life on board the international space station, which can be seen on clear nights from the bedroom window. The play takes a semi-autobiographical look at the writer's own experience of living with a chronically sick partner for the last five years. At the same time, the piece investigates the degree to which any story is 'based on truth' and the ethics of telling stories about the lives of others. Oh, it's a love story too.

Synopsis:

Invisible Man is the wordless story of an improbable imposture. A violin maker and her husband make beautiful instruments for a brutal buyer, who profits by exporting them across the border to the city that glows in the distance. Hypnotised by dreams of the city and the freedom it offers, one night the man makes a break for it, leaving the woman to face the music. But nearby, a prisoner escapes from his cell and arrives at the house of the woman. Frightened at first, they soon begin a daring façade in the face of increasingly suspicious authorities. Combining physical performance, puppetry, projected digital imagery and an original music score, Invisible Man is a haunting and deeply atmospheric show.

Back home, his estranged brother receives a parcel from death row containing stories of surreal but strangely familiar incidents. These incidents relate to a past they both remember and to a photograph taken years ago, in which they stand side by side. Last Stand is a distinctively visual show about brotherhood, memory, time and reflection, in which light paints amazing pictures and stories materialise out of thin air.

Synopsis:

Lost Ones is a surreal, fantastical adventure about a man whose unusual past is coming back to haunt him. Strange creatures are emerging from his body and disappearing through a hole in the skirting board. Each carries a bag in which something valuable is being smuggled to the void on the other side. It all goes back to an incident at the top of a mountain, a class outing years before. A group of extraordinary children at the notorious academy, St Peter's On The Hill, are taken on a day out by their teacher. Only one child comes back, but what happened on that mountain? And why has it come back to haunt our hero now? Based on a series of extraordinary short stories by Matthew Lenton, Lost Ones is a strange, beautiful and ever so slightly twisted piece with performance, extraordinary design and anarchic live music.

Mancub

Mancub is a beautiful, absurd, magic realist story of a boy who seems to be turning into animals. Paul faces the usual struggles of growing up. Struggles for understanding with his father, struggles to work out what girls are all about. But he also faces a more pressing problem. Reality seems to be shifting, the balance of things changing as the people around him begin to display the traits of certain animals. But stranger still are the changes he sees in himself. Does Paul turn into animals, or does he only think he does?

Synopsis:

We are watching through the windows of a house, with a garden: different rooms, different people. What unfolds within is a mystery to be pieced together. Who is the young couple recently moved in? What is he doing in the bathroom? Who is that strange presence up above? And what is it that's moving in the garden? Saturday Night is the darker, dreamier and more surreal companion piece to Vanishing Point's innovative and award-winning show, Interiors. Saturday Night is about the environments we create for ourselves and call home, the dreams we build together, the secrets we keep from each other. It is about the creeping force of nature and the respite we find in the smallest of pleasures.
